The Power of Words #1

The Power of Words #1

Sometimes we dismiss things has not much value but later on find out that it did have a lot of value to it??

Proverbs 18:21 (NLT): The tongue can bring death or life;

those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

With a lot of us we underestimate the impact our words can have

We need to be aware that our words can speak life or speak death to those around us

On average we speak around 16,000 words per day

16,000 words that we speak is like writing a 60 page book every day we speak from the words we use every day

Each of these words matter and the Bible is going to warns us about not being careless with our words

Some of you can remember a coach, teacher, parents, siblings, ect saying a few words that either have you life or gave you death

Matthew 12:36–37 (NLT): And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

Our words reveal who we are

That’s why Christ says our words will acquit us or condemn us

In a relationship, our words will haunt us because sooner or later it comes out.

It doesn’t define us but in the heat of a argument there may be words said that can be hurtful

What we need to do is not say anything to quickly but use our words wisely

Genesis 1:3-5 (NLT): Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

So what tools is God using to create the Universe?

He’s using “words”

The power of words

God says, it is..!!

We see this throughout the creation account. God says and it happens

With words, God “creates” and He “calls”

God creates and identifies

We see the power of words from the beginning

This is why ours words need to be chosen carefully

If we try to build something up and use the wrong words. We not only tore down but our spoken words condemn

Genesis 3:1 (NLT): The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

The serpent speaks, he attacks what God has said

He uses the power of words

The enemy uses words to bring death where there was life. To bring darkness where there is light

Notice something here…..

The words that the serpent spoke were words that wasn’t true but it didn’t stop the power of the words

The moment you believe words, you give life to them

You empower them

You begin to speak those words in your heart

We see from the beginning that God speaks, the serpent speaks and we see the power of words. We see life and death from the power of words

God speaks and He

Creates, builds, blesses

The enemy speaks and he

Accuses, tempts, deceives and destroys

It’s hardwired into the universe the power of words

John 1:1–5 (NLT): 1 In the beginning the Word already existed.

The Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

2 He existed in the beginning with God.

3 God created everything through him,

and nothing was created except through him.

4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,

and his life brought light to everyone.

5 The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness can never extinguish it.

In Genesis God speaks light into the darkness

In John, Jesus is introduced as the Word that has come to bring light into darkness

(Word.  Logos. Means the expression or declaration of a thought)

The power of the word in Jesus who brings light into the darkness

Is the words we use or choose bringing light to those that are in darkness?

Are we breathing life or death into a relationship?

If we want a meaningful relationship then we need to have words that bring light and life to it

Throughout Jesus’s ministry He uses words to speak the kingdom of Heaven into the world

Mark 1:38 (NLT): But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.”

Luke 4:18–19 (NLT): The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,

that the blind will see,

that the oppressed will be set free,

19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”

Jesus was with God in the beginning and God speaks light into the darkness

In John we see Jesus is the word speaking light into the darkness

Speaking about freedom, Good News, healing, deliverance

There is power of life in His words

There should be power of life in our words as well.

Has you read through the Gospels you will begin to see the pattern that Jesus uses words to speak life, healing and blessing

Lots of examples of this throughout the gospels

When Jesus and the disciples were on a boat and a storm came

Jesus didn’t speak to it; He spoke at it

He rebuked the storm

He speaks words of power

The moment Jesus speaks peace. The storm is calm

The power of words

This is how it is and will be

When He speaks peace, it’s peace

John 11

We see that Jesus shows up at the tomb of Lazarus a few days after Lazarus is dead

Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead

Jesus didn’t walk in the tomb and shock him or popped him on the head

The Bible says He shouted in a loud voice Lazarus come forth

And with Those words He speaks life into death

And we see Lazarus comes back from the dead

The power of words

The examples here are used to understand the power of words

These were words were tools that were used to bring life where there was death and light where there was darkness

God has given us the ability to vocalize or to speak and with that ability He has given us the power to speak life or to speak death into the world around us by using our words

Our words are the most powerful tool then most of us has ever realized

We can hurt people with our words that we speak

Our words can either build up or tear down

They can create or destroy

They can in prison or set free

We have brought hurt, we have brought pain from words we have spoken to other people

We run away from things because we don’t want to indict ourselves

We don’t want to be responsible so we run away

It’s very simple and sometimes we don’t want to accept that

In your mind you begin to ask yourself can it really bring life to my relationship/marriage ?

Can it really bring life to my work ?

Every morning when we wake up, speak Gods Word in your life, in your relationship, in your work

Proverbs 18:21 (NLT): The tongue can bring death or life;

those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Your words are seeds and it gets planted and bears fruit

What fruit you planted with your words you have to eat. Your words have life or death

For some people we feel we are a prisoner of our past and we don’t speak words of life so we allow Satan to keep reminding us about our past because Satan can use words to. Satan words brings destruction, depression, destroy, ect

Gods Word overrules everything, even Satans.

Romans 8:1 (NLT): So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

The enemy wants you to have bitterness towards others, have a hard heart, because he will remind you of your past and your pain

According to Ephesians 2 God has already prepared the work for me

We need to hold onto Gods Word

The enemy will always keep you in fear or anxiety over things in the world

1 Peter 5:7 (NLT): Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT): For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (NLT): Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

This is not self empowerment

This is us speaking Gods Word over our life

We need to pay attention to what words are coming in and going out

The Bible says we will give a account for every word

Who did I encourage today?

Who did I build up today?

Who did I speak life to today?

Some people have grew up in homes where words were used carelessly and openly

Now that’s the way you speak and you say that’s how I’m wired

But if we do a word inventory and speak Gods Word into our life every day. It could change how we speak

It takes 21 days to develop a habit

It also takes 21 days to undo a habit

Are we giving life or death to our words?

Are we giving light in darkness?
